| HISTORY |
| The Oppenheimer Bowling Cup was donated to the Umbogintwini Bowling Club by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer in 1938. The Bowling Club formed part of the Umbogintwini Club which was founded in 1910 as a recreational club for the employees of the ”Dynamite Factory” in the Umbogintwini Industrial Complex. This trophy (depicted above) is made of solid silver. Bowling at Umbogintwini commenced in 1935. The Trophy was selected by the then Durban District to be presented to the winners of the Open Mixed Pairs which began in 1939 and has been hotly contested every year since then. During the earlier years, grandstands were erected around the greens to seat the hundreds of spectators who arrived to view the ¼‘s, the semi’s and the finals, which have traditionally been held at the Twini Club. The Mixed pairs competition was originally sponsored by the Oppenheimer Family, later by A.E.C.I. and in the latter years by the Umbogintwini Bowling Club itself, with kind assistance of sponsorship from Heartland Leasing, a subsidiary of A.E.C.I. More recently SpecSavers have opted in as co-sponsors of the event. The Umbogintwini Bowling Club, being “Not Your Average Bowling Club” is committed to the ongoing sponsorship of this prestigious competition and wishes the hundreds of players that have played in the preliminary rounds as well as the eventual winners and runners-up – Many years of happy bowling, and our assurance that the sport of bowls is “alive, well and thriving” at Twini. All the winners since 1939
